Edo Election: Court Set to Commit Jega to Prison

Jega: Risks prison committal

A court in Abuja has ordered the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, to show cause why he should not be committed to prison for disobeying its order barring the use of the procured collapsible transparent ballot boxes for the conduct of last Saturday’s Edo State governorship elections.

Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court issued a ‘Form 49’ against Jega INEC and the Registrar of Patent, Federal Ministry of Commerce and Trade.

The court had made an order barring the deployment of the procured transparent ballot boxes for the poll without seeking the consent of the patent owner to the boxes.

It declared as illegal the use of the collapsible transparent ballot boxes used for the 2011 general elections by INEC without the consent of the patent owner.
