GNETUM AFRICANUM |
Gnetum africanum, Welw is a forest perennial plant. It
is ovate-oblong in shape and usually evergreen. Its leaves are opposite with
pinnate veins.
Its distribution extends from South-east Nigeria to Congo and
even Angola. It belongs to the Kingdom-Plantae, Division- Gnetophyta, Class-
Gnetopsida, Order- Gnetales, Family- Gnetaceae , Genus- Gnetum and Species-Gnetum africanum, Welw.
In Congo and Angola, it is locally called 'koko', the
Anglophone Cameroun call it 'eru' while the Francophone Cameroun call it 'oko. In
Nigeria, the Igbos call it 'Ukasi' while the Efiks call it 'afang'.
