There are two contrasting shadows under which the children of men can stay. One is the shadow of the Almighty (the shadow of life and care), and the other is the shadow of death. The kind of shadow under which men stay determine where the placement of their trust will be and the kind of destiny they face in life. Some men are said to abide under the shadow of the Almighty; while others are said to sit under the shadow of death. To abide and to sit are two different positions any man can be in life. To abide implies freedom and safety; while to sit implies bondage. The place where a man is abiding or sitting is the point of his trust and destiny. This is the crucial choice which life must make, consciously or unconsciously. Every man must come into the light of this awareness so that he can consciously chose the right place to fix his trust.
The shadow of death: Shadow of death is a designation of the place of darkness or gloom. It is a figurative of death and the grave as well as a state of ignorance and lack of light and knowledge. The shadow of death is a spiritual state where light and life are absent. It is the region or territory of death where people sit in spiritual blackout, because there is no knowledge of the truth concerning the salvation of their souls. Here, religion is made to replace Christ; and works replace faith in the finished work of Christ- Matt. 4:14-16. Those who are sitting in this spiritual blackout do not know the way out of it. In their attempt to come out of it, they devise and trust all kinds of human methods to appease their consciences. This accounts for so many cults and false religious sects in the world today. They are just blinded and misguided human efforts to come out of the gloomy spiritual state of those who are lost- 2 Cor. 4:3-6. Religion is the replacement of God's plan of salvation with human device and effort to please Him or find some kind of peace or acceptance. When lost men do not have the real thing, their tendency is to replace it with counterfeit. As a result of ignorance of the truth, they choose to believe and trust in lies.
The shadow of life: The shadow of life is also known as the shadow of the Almighty. It is either life spreads its shadow or death does. The shadow being spread over us controls our destinies. The shadow of His wings is the divine canopy that gives direction to God's children here on earth who are on a journey to the promised land. Under this canopy, we are kept as the apple of God's eyes and the blood of Jesus Christ serves as a protection to us. This blood is the shadow of covering that protects God's children from the spirit of death- Ex. 12:12-13.
