The
word ''witch'' refers to a mistress of the spirit of divination. The spirit of
Jezebel does not only promote idolatry and immoral freedom, it also promotes
witchcraft or divination. This practice invokes the power of Satan against
fellow human beings or human activities, either to manipulate, control or cause
havoc on them. This power can be released or set in motion through open threat,
intimidation or secret invocation.
Jezebel
used open threat against prophet Elijah after she learnt about what happened at
the contest from her husband, Ahab. This threat was backed by the power of
royal incumbency and the power of witchcraft. The Israelites usually swore by
the name of the Lord but Jezebel swore by the name of her gods. When Elijah
received this threat, he (a spiritual giant and champion who fearlessly
confronted ungodly kings) became a coward and fled for his life before a woman
who was a foreigner in the land of Israel-1 Kgs. 18:1-8. The power of
witchcraft can prevail against God's people when they are taken off guard and
not prepared for it. ''Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he
falls...'' 1 Cor. 10:12; 1 Pet. 5:8-9.
When
one is not prepared and carried away with joy, excitement of our success or achievements,
the enemy can strike and we may not be strong enough to stand; hence the Lord commanded
us to be watchful and prayerful- Matt. 26: 40-41. The sin of witchcraft begins
with stubbornness and rebellion (stubbornness is as the in of idolatry and
rebellion as the sin of witchcraft)- 1 Sam. 15:22-23.
There
are white witchcraft which is the use of counterfeit spiritual authority for
good; Black witchcraft which is the practice of magic for evil; Ancestral
witchcraft which is practiced among traditional relatives to hunt one's
ancestral or family lineage for evil; Marine witchcraft which is the use of
water spirit to bring harm to a victim (water spirit is an immoral spirit that
operates through human agents, mostly females to carry out sexual immorality
among men and women, and it is also familiar in nature as it can use the image
of known or unknown person to attack its victim); Charismatic witchcraft which
uses the gifts of the holy spirit to intimidate, manipulate, control and even
bring harm upon people contrary to God's purpose of giving the gifts which are for
edification, exhortation and comfort of the believers (soothsayers)- 1 Cor.
4:3-4; Deut. 23:3-6; 2 Pet. 2:15-22
