Though
there were many prophets in the land of Israel, as witnessed and hidden by
Obediah, but the suited man for the national assignment of bringing judgment
upon all who bowed down to Baal and Baal itself was Elijah. In the old
testament, whenever there is a divine mandate for prophetic mission, God always
sends one prophet on that mission. No two prophets are sent by God at the same
time on the same mission. According to the bible, the first mention of Elijah
the Tishibite was when he appeared to Ahab and made pronouncement about the judgment
of drought and famine- 1 Kgs. 17:1-6.
His
second appearance to Ahab was for the contest between him and Ahab's false
prophets of Baal- 1 Kgs. 18. God's prophets on mission are always lone wolf
prophet except when they are accompanied by a servant. Elijah was a lone wolf prophet without any
record of his calling, unlike Elisha his successor. He came to the scene with
authority and power of divine attorney that struck the government of his time with
great terror, that no king could stand before him without bowing to his
authority and his God- 2 Kgs. 2.
The
contest was attended by prophet Elijah and only the prophets of Baal for Ahab
(four hundred and fifty prophets), but the four hundred prophets of Jezebel
were not in attendance until the emergence of Jehu- 2Kgs. 9-10.
In the coming days of revival, the most
powerful army ever assembled will be mustered. This army will not be equipped
with guns or swords, but no power will prevail against them. This army has been
enlisted by the Lord. He will train it and lead it.
