The
divine way of preserving the law is by propagation, from one generation to
another- Deut. 4:9-10; 6:7; Ps. 78:3-8. The purpose is to maintain and preserve
the legacy of godly generation so that God's children will not forget His deeds
and testimonies, but remain loyal and faithful to God's commandments.
God's
law and testimony should be a yardstick to every new generation for measuring
their lifestyle. To some new generations, their fathers might be godly or
ungodly. The basis for God's judgment for any generation is not whether or not,
their fathers were godly, but on them and their ability to uphold His law and
testimony and obey His word that was passed on to them. It is an acceptable and
worthy legacy for fathers to b e role models to their children, but it is not
always a guarantee that the upcoming generation would emulate their fathers in
being godly. Joshua generation and their children that succeeded them is an
alarming example- Judg. 2:6-15.
Every
generation is responsible to God for their own way of life- whether it is
pleasing or displeasing to Him. No one is justified before God for blaming his
or her ways of life on their parents' shortcomings. As faith without work is
dead, so is the law without testimony. Hence, God first established the
testimony of deliverance, signs and wonders in the sight of His people, Israel,
in Egypt, at the Red sea, and in the wilderness before He brought them to mount
Sinai to appoint a law of standard for them. Jesus also did same before He died
on the cross and rose from the dead to establish the gospel of salvation. He
sent His apostles and disciples to preach the gospel with signs and wonders to
accompany them- Lk. 4:14; Mk. 16:15-20; Heb. 2;1-4.
In
the scriptures, the term testimony refers to the words of messages from God
given through His messengers. It is also known as ''witness''. And these
messages are accompanied by testimonies.
The
law is a standard of life and living which must be obeyed, and upheld to
sustain the testimony- the law is the standard of holiness, righteousness,
relationship, and service as appointed by God for those who bear His testimony
to the world.
The
ark itself is called the ark of testimony because it contained three things that had spiritual significance;
and their meaning are thus;- the two tables of law which signifies the Lawgiver
or a type of God; -Golden pot of manner which represents a type of Jesus, the
bread of life that came down from heaven; and Aaron's rod that budded which
represents a type of the Holy spirit. The bud, flower and the almond fruit- one
rod, yet threefold manifestation of fruitfulness. This speaks of Godhead. The
law was kept and preserved in the ark with these evidences or proofs of its
authenticity.
