This
refers to witness. John the Baptist was sent to be the fore-runner witness for
the Lord Jesus. His ministry was solely to testify about Christ, so that
through him. men might be saved. People were not meant to believe in John, but
to believe in who he testified about- Jn. 1:1-15.
The
testimony of John about Jesus carried weight of divine authentication. The
weightier testimonies were that of the
father; the works He did and the scriptures- Jn. 5:36-40. Jesus did not depend
on the testimony about Himself- His personal testimony about Himself required
the support of all God's revelation; otherwise it would have been unacceptable.
His word, ''the father testifies concerning the son'' might not be acceptable
to the Jews, but it was the testimony that mattered most. The testimony of John
the Baptist was important, but it was not equal to the testimony of the Father.
Also His word '' not that I accept human testimony'' means that He does not
rely on human testimony which is always fallible and often changing. Apart from
the testimony of the Father, the miracles Jesus performed also testified to
what He is and to His divine mission on earth.- Jn. 10:25-30. The three sources
of Jesus' testimonies were infallible and unchanging.
He
established the truth that those who lack the love of God in their hearts go
about seeking human testimony, praise and recognition- Jn. 5:41-42. If we
believe the testimony of men, the testimony of God is weightier and greater-1
Jn. 5:6-12.
The
law and the testimony are the sure foundation of true Christian faith. On both,
faith and good conscience are held together to make our election as sure as
God's peculiar people, royal priesthood, and holy nation.
