Family members sentences to death for killing a woman of over witchcraft

A Jigawa State High Court has sentenced a woman, her husband, brother, and sister to death by hanging for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. The convicts, identified as Hassan Isah, 55, Adama Yahaya, 42, Abdullahi Yahaya, 35, and Maryam Daso Yahaya, 28, were found guilty of beating 30-year-old Salamatu Musa to death with a stick.

The court heard that the convicts had accused the deceased of witchcraft, alleging that her "evil acts" caused the death of their son. After investigating and prosecuting the case, the court found them guilty under Sections 97 and 221(b) of the Penal Code Laws.

In his ruling, Hon. Justice Ado Birnin-kudu stated that the court had found them guilty with full knowledge of the probable consequence being a death sentence. Consequently, the court sentenced them to six years' imprisonment each for criminal conspiracy and death by hanging for culpable homicide.
